Interview with Borja Díaz de Vargas – Head Greenkeeper.

Borja, from an early age knew that he would be linked to the world of golf. He began to practice this sport very young, at the age of 9 year, soon becoming almost professional,  lowering his handicap to 3.

His love for golf made him leave his born place, Seville. He went to American soil to study at MSU (Michigan State University) the studies of “Turfgrass Management Golf Course”. Once he obtained his certificate, he returned to Spain at the Real Club of Sotogrande to gain work experience. Later one, he worked at prestigious golf courses in Andalusia. In Almeria, Desert Springs Golf & Resort; in Marbella, La Quinta Golf & Resort and in Estepona, Valle Romano Golf & Resort.

At the end of 2013, he decided to join Los Naranjos Golf Club, with the main objective of improving the quality standards of the golf course. He currently holds the title of Head Greenkeeper.

He is in charge of a team 15 people. New maintenance staff joined the team in several positions. The new additions along with the more seniority staff makes a very balanced team. All of them are very committed to maintain the optimal conditions of the golf course. Borja is very satisfied with the current work and dedication of his team. Without them, his work would not make any sense. He thanks to all of them and with a special mention to Jose Luis. Because he makes the small battles of daily maintenance easily bearable.

For Borja, the set of our four par 3 holes are very technical, alternating short and long ones. They are also very entertaining, because of their shape and the added difficulty of their hazards. In addition, they have especially beautiful locations. That is why they are their favorite holes, along with the Signature Hole, hole 18.

 Borja’s day to day challenges.

The ultimate goal is to satisfy both members and visitors. In addition to always maintaining the golf course in perfect conditions for both players. At present, he has a handicap 6, which is another of his personal challenges. To bring his current handicap to 3 again.

To conclude, our Head Greenkeeper is very grateful to the property. Los Naranjos GC has been completely renovating the machinery during the last 3 years. In addition to providing great support for the continuous improvement of the the golf course, easing the work for him and his team.
